This was a cut off Gala, this is where minimum times are set for each event and if a swimmer swims faster than the time, they are said to have swum trough the cut off time and the team does not receive any points for that event, but if the time was a pb this will still stand. So this was an ideal opportunity for some of our less experienced swimmers to join in the fun. With the help and encouragement of the "old hands" nerves soon disappeared. Over the course of the evening we had 14 pb's and 4 1st places and with the help of an abundance of 2nd, 3rd and 4th places we came a close 3rd overall. With only four points between 1st and 3rd.
Tori Maxey started the evening with a pb and 3rd place in the Open 100IM. Ian Gill followed with a pb in his Open IM but unfortunately he swam through the cut off time so wasn't awarded any points. Thankfully this only happened twice, the other occasion being Matthew Earth in the 9/U 50 Free.
Tori had another pb in the Open 100 Free and not to be outdone, brother Tom had two pb's in the 13/U 100 Fly and 13/U 100 Back. Other pb's were Nathan Henfrey 9/U 50 Back, George Wensor 9/U 50 Breast and 1st place, Sofia Convertino 13/U 100 Free, Adam Brooker 13/U 100 Free and 1st place, Cheryl Wilson 11/U 100 Free and her first County Qualifying time, Matthew Beckett 11/U 100 Free, Lauren Walsham Open 100 Breast, Adelaide Browne 9/U 50 Free and 1st place, Chloe Walsham 13/U 100 Breast and Alex Wensor 13/U 100 Breast.
The lead changed almost with every race and all teams at some point during the evening were in first place. It went right down to the wire with South Lincs and Deeping going into the last race, the squadron relay, on the same points. Boston were only 3 points in front, it all depended on this race. Deeping came 1st but it wasn't enough to overtake Boston, who came 2nd, we came 3rd. It was a very exciting finale to a great gala and a fitting tribute to Gerry Gibbons who in the past had been our chairman and hard working teacher.
