National Speedo League, Spalding – 12th November 2005

The second round of the National Speedo League saw us with a home draw. Other teams traveled from Lowestoft, Lincoln, Loughborough, Great Yarmouth and Wellingboro.

We knew that this was an extremely important gala as it would decide the qualifiers for the League Final to be held on December 10th. A top two finish was essential to ensure qualification. It was also a tough draw with 2 first placed teams and 2 second placed teams from the earlier rounds battling it out with the remaining teams having finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

We only had 4 outright victories in total, but everyone swam well and there were lots of 2nd and 3rd placings. The wins came from: -

Boys 13/u Medley – Tom Maxey, Adam Brooker, Tom Lane and Alex Wensor. Jessica Whyte 10/11 Girls 50 Back, Ben Marsters Mens Open 100 Back and Tom Lane 13/u Boys 100 Fly.

Also worthy of a special mention are 2 of our Open Ladies, Georgia Croxford (Ladies Captain) who swam literally a couple of days after an operation on her finger and Rebecca Handley who deputised for sister Sarah who was down and out with a virus. Without the support of our older swimmers at University we would find it very hard to compete at this level.

We moved into 2nd place after event 5 and although not strong enough to challenge winners Lowestoft & Oulton Broad we focused our attention on 3rd placed Lincoln Vulcans "B" and manged to comfortably hold them off all the way to the end.

Confirmation has already been received that we will contest the Final on Saturday 10th December so keep this date free as obviously we need our best team available. Clearly there are some strong teams in this division and we may well over reach our potential against this opposition. What ever happens we will swim hard and contest every event.

To reach the final is a fantastic achievement and if we fail in our attempts to win promotion this year the signs are very positive for next year when the dual year age groups probably suit us even better.
